Fonollosa is a small municipality in the Bages comarca of Catalonia, and during the Civil War its collectivized agricultural syndicate — formally named after Karl Marx — issued its own local currency, as dozens of similar bodies did across Republican-controlled territory from 1936 onward. These emergency emissions were a direct consequence of the social revolution that accompanied the military uprising: collectivized enterprises needed a medium of exchange when conventional banking had effectively collapsed at the local level.

The thick card stock was a practical choice — cheaper to produce in quantity without specialist printing equipment, and more durable in daily agricultural transactions. Gari Mon catalogues two varieties for this denomination; this is the B type.
