Flix is a small industrial municipality on the Ebro in Tarragona province, best known for an electrochemical plant that made it strategically significant during the Civil War. Like hundreds of Catalan and Valencian councils, Flix issued its own paper currency in 1937 under the emergency decree that effectively delegated monetary responsibility to local authorities when the Republican government could no longer guarantee the supply of small-denomination coin. These municipal emissions — the moneda local — were legally valid only within the issuing municipality's borders.
Turró's catalog remains the definitive reference for this class of emission, and #1018 is among the less frequently encountered Tarragona provincial issues.
