One of several hundred municipal emergency notes (referred to collectively as "moneda de necessitat" or "guerra civil" issues) printed during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican government's inability to maintain a functioning coin supply forced Catalan municipalities to produce their own fractional currency. Esplugues de Llobregat, a small industrial town immediately southwest of Barcelona, contracted Imprenta Avant — an Barcelona press with anarcho-syndicalist ties during the period — to produce this series.
Turró's catalog remains the standard reference for these Catalan municipal issues, documenting over a thousand distinct types. This note's survival rate is modest; most circulated hard in a wartime local economy before the Nationalist victory in early 1939 rendered them worthless.
