Espluga de Francolí is a small town in the Camp de Tarragona, and this 1 Peseta note is one of hundreds of municipal emergency issues produced across Republican-held Catalonia after the July 1936 military uprising collapsed the normal supply of small coinage almost overnight. The Consell Municipal — like dozens of similar local bodies — was effectively forced into issuing paper scrip to keep local commerce moving, with no central authorization and no standardized format required.
Imprenta Sugrañes of Tarragona handled a significant number of these small municipal commissions throughout the province. The Turró catalogue remains the primary reference for the full typology of these wartime Catalan locals.
