El Vilosell is a tiny municipality in the Garrigues comarca of Lleida province — population well under a thousand even then. Like hundreds of Catalan and Valencian towns during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional emergency currency when Republican-zone coinage all but vanished from circulation after 1936. The Generalitat de Catalunya tolerated but did not formally authorize these local emissions; they functioned purely on municipal trust and rarely circulated beyond the village itself.
Arts Gràfiques Ilerda was the workhorse printer for much of this provincial emergency paper in the Lleida area. Francisco Ciurana signed as alcalde under a Republican administration that would be swept away within two years of this note's issue.
