El Perelló is a small municipality in the Baix Ebre comarca of Tarragona province, and this 1 Peseta note is one of hundreds of local emergency issues — vals municipals — authorized by the Generalitat de Catalunya during the Civil War to address an acute shortage of fractional coinage. Republican militias had largely melted down or hoarded small-denomination metal currency, leaving ordinary commercial transactions impossible in rural towns.
Imprenta Solé in Tarragona printed for numerous Catalan municipalities during this period, producing notes of varying quality depending on available stock. The Turró catalogue remains the authoritative reference for these local Republican-zone emissions, cataloguing them by issuing municipality.
