Consejo Municipal de Criptana issued this emergency local currency during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone faced a near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage in circulation. Municipalities across La Mancha stepped in to fill the gap with paper fractional notes, many printed under improvised conditions with limited typographic resources. Criptana — more formally Campo de Criptana, in Ciudad Real province — was a Republican-held town through most of the conflict.
Municipal emergency issues from this region are poorly documented, and survival rates vary sharply. The Garrido Mora catalog reference confirms authenticity; without it, distinguishing genuine issues from later facsimiles can be difficult.
