Codines del Vallès is a small municipality in the Vallès Oriental comarca, and this 1937 peseta is one of hundreds of locally issued emergency notes — vals municipals — produced across Catalonia after the Civil War disrupted the national money supply. The Republican government authorized municipal and collective issuers to fill the small-denomination vacuum left when hoarding stripped coins from daily commerce almost entirely.
C.G. Avant was a Barcelona printer active in the republican press during the war years. Turró catalogues this emission as #839, placing it within the densely documented Catalan local issues that survive in wildly varying quantities — some municipalities produced runs in the thousands, others in the low hundreds.
