Castellciutat is a small settlement in the Alt Urgell comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities, its local council issued small-denomination emergency currency during the Spanish Civil War — a direct response to the acute shortage of metallic coin that paralyzed daily commerce after 1936. These municipal emissions, collectively catalogued under the Turró system, were produced locally with whatever printing resources were available, which is why cardboard stock appears so frequently across the series.
Turró 703 is rarely encountered in any condition. Alt Urgell issues generally circulated hard within tight geographic limits and few survived the postwar years.
