Not a forgery and not a souvenir — this is an officially authorized facsimile of a Civil War-era municipal emergency note, produced by Spain's own national mint nearly seven decades after the original circulated. Castellar, like hundreds of small Republican-held municipalities in 1936–39, issued its own paper scrip when the war severed normal coin supply chains. The 2003 replica was part of a broader commemorative program in which the FNMT reproduced wartime local issues with a watermark to distinguish them legally from originals.
Collectors should note that the FNMT's involvement does not make these rare — production runs were generous.
