Castejón de Sos is a small municipality in the Aragonese Pyrenees, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its council issued emergency fractional currency — *moneda local* — to address the near-total disappearance of coin from circulation after 1936. The Republican government tolerated these emissions rather than authorizing them, and their legal standing was always ambiguous.
The Centre d'Administració Municipal in Barcelona produced notes for dozens of Catalan and Aragonese councils during this period, which gives the series a certain uniformity of production quality that the chaotic political circumstances might not suggest. Castejón de Sos sits in the Ribagorza comarca, territory that remained behind Republican lines through much of the conflict.
