Cardona's municipal notes of 1937 belong to the extraordinary proliferation of local emergency currency that swept Catalonia after the July 1936 uprising effectively paralyzed conventional banking. With the Republican government slow to supply small-denomination coinage to the provinces, hundreds of Catalan municipalities printed their own paper to keep local commerce moving — Cardona among them. The salt-mining town issued these notes under its wartime Ajuntament, which by that point operated under significant anarcho-syndicalist influence.

Turró catalogues well over a thousand such Catalan local issues; Cardona's is one of the less commonly encountered ones from the comarca of Bages.
