Issued during the Spanish Civil War, municipal and local council notes of this type — often called billetes locales or moneda de necesidad — filled a vacuum created when metallic coinage vanished from circulation almost entirely after 1936. Hoarding, export, and melting for the war effort stripped small change from everyday commerce across Republican-held territory, forcing hundreds of municipalities to print their own fractional currency.
Cañada is a small settlement in the province of Alicante. The Gari Monovar reference number is unassigned, suggesting this piece was either uncatalogued at time of compilation or recorded without a confirmed specimen.
