Calzada de Calatrava is a small municipality in the Ciudad Real province of Castilla–La Mancha, and like hundreds of similarly sized Republican-held towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when the Republic's coin supply collapsed almost entirely after 1936. Hoarding, melting, and the disruption of the Nationalist blockade all contributed to a chronic shortage of small change that no central authority adequately resolved.

The Garist Moneda catalog reference is incomplete for this piece — a reflection of how poorly documented many of these hyper-local emissions remain, not of any particular rarity status either way. Thick card stock was the practical choice for short-run municipal printings with no access to proper banknote paper.
