Callús is a small municipality in the Bages comarca of Catalonia, and like dozens of similar villages it was forced to issue its own emergency paper currency during the Civil War after the Republican government's decree of May 1937 pushed local councils to fill the coin vacuum caused by hoarding and metal shortages. The note was printed not in Callús itself but at Imprenta Rodergas in nearby Súria — a practical choice given the town's minimal infrastructure.
Turró catalogues several hundred such municipal emissions from Catalonia alone, which puts the Callús issue in a crowded field. What distinguishes these hyper-local notes is the extreme fragility of their authority: both signatories, Alcalde Pere Brú and Finance Councillor Lluís Estrada, held office under a Republican municipal structure that would cease to exist entirely within two years.
