The Sindicat Obrer de les Aigües de Barcelona — the workers' union of the Barcelona water utility — issued this note during the anarcho-syndicalist collectivization that swept Catalonia in the early months of the Civil War. Hundreds of enterprises, including public utilities, came under worker control after July 1936, and many issued their own scrip to meet payroll when conventional currency grew scarce or distrusted.
Imprenta Martí, Marí y Cia. was a Barcelona commercial printer with no specialist banknote background, which shows in the modest production values typical of the emergency vales issued by collectives across the region. AL#1170 is among the more obscure entries in the Allepuz catalogue of Civil War local issues.
