Bagà is a small town in the Berguedà comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of other Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, it resorted to printing its own emergency fractional currency when the Republic's coinage supply collapsed under wartime pressure. The Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized local issues, but coordination was loose — each ajuntament essentially managed its own problem. Imprenta Jaume Molins in nearby Berga served several of these local bodies, which means the printing quality here is more consistent than many comparable issues from smaller poblacions.
The official stamp functions as the primary anti-counterfeiting measure, a deliberately low-tech solution for a note that was never expected to circulate beyond the immediate locality.
