The Unió de Cooperadors de Badalona was one of hundreds of Catalan cooperative societies that began issuing local paper scrip after the July 1936 military uprising paralyzed the Spanish banking system and drained metallic coin from circulation almost overnight. These emergency issues — collectively known as moneda local or paper de guerra — were sanctioned by the Generalitat de Catalunya as a practical stopgap, not a formal monetary program, which meant quality control and redemption guarantees varied enormously from one issuer to the next.

Cooperative-issued scrip from the Badalona area is notably scarcer than municipal issues from the same period, as cooperative societies typically printed smaller runs and kept no centralized archive.
