Arenys de Mar was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities forced into emergency paper money production after the Spanish Civil War disrupted coin supplies almost immediately following the July 1936 uprising. The Ajuntament issued these notes under the broader Republican-era scheme of local emergency currency — "moneda local" — authorized provisionally to keep small-denomination transactions functioning when metallic coinage vanished from circulation almost overnight through hoarding and melting.
Imprenta Ausetana in Vic produced notes for multiple municipalities across the region, which occasionally creates attribution confusion in collections. Turró 185 places this firmly within the Arenys de Mar issue.
