Algemesí is a small agricultural town in the Valencia region, and like hundreds of Spanish municipalities, it issued its own emergency paper money during the Civil War after the Republic's central supply of small coinage collapsed entirely. These local emissions — known collectively as "billetes de necesidad" — were produced under improvised conditions, with quality varying wildly from one town to the next. Algemesí's issues are catalogued but not particularly common, as most circulated hard within a limited geographic radius and were discarded or destroyed once the war ended.
