Alcoy's municipal council issued emergency paper money during the Spanish Civil War when small-change coinage effectively disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply lost to the disruptions of war. Dozens of Spanish municipalities did the same between 1936 and 1938, creating a chaotic patchwork of purely local scrip that was legally worthless outside its issuing town.
This is a replica. The originals were printed by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre in Madrid — an unusual arrangement given that Alcoy sits in Valencia province, well behind Republican lines but hardly convenient to the capital.
