Alcoy's 1937 emergency paper issues belong to the dense ecosystem of Republican wartime municipal currency — the so-called "billetes de necesidad" — produced when the central government could not guarantee coin supply to local economies. Alcoy, an industrial town in Valencia with a long anarchist tradition, issued its own series independently of provincial coordination, a reflection of the genuine autonomy many Valencian municipalities exercised during the early war period.
The Gari Mon cataloguing for this series is more reliable than the older Turró references for Alcoy specifically, though overlaps and variant attributions remain unresolved for some denominations.
