Alcañiz, a town in Teruel province, fell within the Aragonese front — one of the most contested and chaotic theatres of the Spanish Civil War. Municipal councils across the Republican zone issued their own fractional currency in 1936–37 because the central government could not supply enough small-denomination coinage to keep local commerce functioning. These emergency notes, known broadly as "moneda local" or "billete de necesidad," were authorized under Republican decree but designed and printed entirely at the municipal level, which accounts for the wildly inconsistent quality across issuers.
