Alberique is a small agricultural municipality in Valencia's Ribera Alta comarca, and this note was issued by its rural workers' union — the Sindicato de Trabajadores del Campo — during the Civil War period when the Republican zone faced a severe shortage of fractional coinage. These emergency issues, known as *moneda de cartón* or simply *cartones*, were produced by municipalities, unions, and cooperatives across the Republican territory to fill the gap left by hoarded or disappeared small-denomination metal currency.

The S.T.C. affiliation places this squarely within the UGT-aligned agricultural labor movement. At 48 × 30 mm on thick card, it circulated locally and almost certainly never traveled far beyond the immediate district.
