Aigüestoses del Llobregat issued cardboard emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican government's collapse of the peseta supply chain left Catalan municipalities scrambling to produce their own local scrip. These ajuntament-issued pieces were never intended to circulate beyond the issuing town and were theoretically redeemable once the crisis passed — a promise most municipalities could not keep.
At 48mm, this is an unusually large format for a one-peseta piece, likely a deliberate anti-counterfeiting measure given how crude the production facilities were.
