Additional information

Aigüestoses del Llobregat — a small municipality in the Berguedà comarca — issued this cardboard emergency note during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone faced a near-total collapse of small-denomination metallic coinage. The central government's Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized local ayuntamientos to produce their own fractional currency in 1937, and hundreds of Catalan municipalities complied, flooding the zone with an extraordinary variety of paper and cardboard issues that modern collectors now categorize under the broader moneda local classification.

At 40mm this is a large-format cardboard piece, and survival rates for these issues correlate poorly with original mintage — humidity, wartime disruption, and the Franco regime's deliberate suppression of Republican-era material destroyed the majority.
