Reverse description A wreath of laurel branches, tied at the base with a ribbon bow, frames the central field in an oval form. Within the wreath, the denomination and date are inscribed in three lines in the field: EEN above PENNY above 1874, all in bold upright roman capitals. The word MUNTSPROEVE (meaning 'pattern' or 'coin trial' in Dutch/Afrikaans) appears in small capitals along the lower exergual area beneath the wreath. A ring of raised pearls encircles the design, with the milled edge visible beyond.
