Obverse description A standing female figure, representing Justice or Britannia, is depicted facing left in the centre of the field, draped in classical robes and holding a balance scale in her outstretched left hand. Behind her, to the left, a ship under sail is visible in the middle ground, evoking the maritime commerce of colonial New South Wales. The figure stands on rocky ground, with additional symbolic elements in the field. The circumferential legend NEW SOUTH WALES runs around the upper portion of the coin within a beaded border that frames the entire design.
