| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of a Maori figure with facial tattooing (moko), the hair dressed with three feathers rising from the crown. The legend ONE PENNY TOKEN arcs around the upper periphery of the field. The portrait is rendered in moderate relief in a style typical of mid-19th century colonial trade token engraving. |

The layout is entirely typographic with no pictorial device, characteristic of colonial New Zealand tradesman's tokens of the 1860s–1870s. |
