| Obverse description | Left-facing draped bust of a Maori figure with facial tattooing (moko), the hair dressed with three feathers rising from the crown. The legend ONE PENNY TOKEN arcs around the upper periphery of the field. The portrait is rendered in moderate relief in a style typical of mid-19th century colonial trade token engraving. |

| Reverse description | The central field bears the merchant's name EDWARD WATERS in bold raised letters across the middle, with CONFECTIONER arcing above and QUEEN ST below. The circular peripheral legend reads WHOLESALE & RETAIL around the upper arc and AUCKLAND along the lower arc, all in incuse lettering within a plain border. The layout is entirely typographic with no pictorial device, characteristic of colonial New Zealand tradesman's tokens of the 1860s–1870s. |
