Obverse description The entire surface of this emergency surcharge piece is occupied by a crudely hand-stamped commercial legend applied directly over a base British copper penny or halfpenny host coin. The peripheral legend reads SUGAR WORKS . TREACLE DELIVERED . around the circumference, while the central field bears the inscription BY W. COOK BAY ST SANDRIDGE in multiple lines. The lettering is irregular and deeply punched, with individual characters of varying size and alignment, reflecting the primitive nature of the counterstamp technique employed. The underlying host coin's original design is entirely obscured by the surcharge. This piece represents a rare example of a private merchant emergency token produced during the acute small-change shortage that afflicted the colony of Victoria during the gold rush era.
