Obverse description A crowned Tudor double rose occupies the central field, with a smaller inner rose within the larger outer petals, rendered in relief typical of mid-16th century hammered coinage. The rose is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, beyond which a Latin legend runs continuously around the periphery. The design is characteristic of the base-issue pennies struck under the joint reign of Philip and Mary, employing the rose as a dynastic emblem in lieu of royal portraiture on this denomination.
