Comments

Peveril, located near Peel on the Isle of Man, was one of several internment camps established by the British government under Defence Regulation 18B during the Second World War. The internees were predominantly Category A Germans and Austrians — those deemed highest security risk — along with a significant contingent of British Union of Fascists members following mass arrests after May 1940. Camp scrip like this penny note was introduced to allow internal purchasing while keeping standard currency out of internee hands, a practice applied across the Isle of Man camps including Hutchinson, Onchan, and Ramsey.

The paper issues from Peveril are notably scarce. The camp held far fewer internees than the larger facilities, and surviving scrip of any denomination from this site is uncommon in the trade.
