Additional information

Milner & Thomson operated as stationers and booksellers in Christchurch during the early colonial period, issuing trade tokens to address the chronic shortage of small change that plagued New Zealand commerce throughout the nineteenth century. The colonial government's reluctance to mint local coinage left merchants dependent on imported British copper and a patchwork of private token issues, of which this large-series penny is a product. The Andrews, Roth, and Gray references all catalogue it consistently, suggesting surviving examples surface with enough regularity to have been well-documented across three major New Zealand token studies.
