Milner & Thompson operated as one of the more prominent general merchants in Christchurch during the 1870s and 1880s, issuing tradesman's tokens at a time when the New Zealand colonial government's copper coinage remained chronically undersupplied for everyday retail transactions. The "Large Series" designation distinguishes these from the firm's later, reduced-diameter issues — a practical response to complaints that the heavier tokens were unpopular in circulation.
Andrews #377 is among the better-documented Canterbury province tokens, appearing consistently in the major New Zealand trade token reference works with concordant numbering across Andrews, Renniks, and Gray.
