Obverse description The obverse field is entirely typographic in character, bearing no figurative device. The firm name METCALFE & LLOYD is prominently displayed in large raised capital letters across the centre of the field, with an ampersand set between the two surnames. Surrounding the central legend, a circular peripheral inscription reads SHIPPING AND FAMILY GROCERS along the upper arc and 478 GEORGE ST SYDNEY along the lower arc, all in capital Roman letters. The whole is enclosed within a finely beaded inner border and a plain raised rim, giving the token a neat, commercial appearance typical of mid-nineteenth-century Australian tradesmen's issues.
