Additional information

Larcombe and Company operated as general merchants in Brisbane during the late 1850s and early 1860s, a period when Queensland — only separated from New South Wales in 1859 — had virtually no reliable small-denomination coinage in circulation. Private traders filled the gap with copper tokens, effectively running their own monetary supply. The Colonial token trade in Australia was largely extinguished by legislation in 1863, which prohibited the circulation of private copper pieces, making the operational window for issues like this one extremely narrow.
