Obverse description A detailed engraved view of Loch Leven Castle occupies the central field, depicting the medieval island fortress with its prominent square tower and curtain walls set against a landscape of trees and water, rendered in fine pictorial style characteristic of late 18th-century Conder token engraving. The exergue bears the engraver's signature P.K.FECIT. The surrounding circular legend reads: * LOCH LEVEN PENNY 1797 * Q.MARY IMPRISONED IN THE ISLE AND CASTLE.A.D.1567, referencing the historic imprisonment of Mary Queen of Scots at the castle in 1567.
