Obverse description Facing crowned bust of King John, rendered in the flat, stylized manner characteristic of early medieval Irish hammered coinage. The king holds a cruciform scepter before him, with a rosette device positioned to the right of the effigy. The entire design is contained within a triangular border, a distinctive feature of the REX coinage series. A circular Latin legend surrounds the triangular frame, reading +IOHAN REX, identifying the issuing monarch.
