| Obverse description | Facing crowned royal effigy rendered in the stylised Romanesque manner characteristic of King John's Short Cross coinage. The bearded royal portrait is depicted full-face within a beaded inner circle, with the crown bearing prominent pellets along its upper edge. Curling hair falls to either side of the face, and the beard is rendered with fine incised lines. The surrounding field carries the divided royal legend in two lines reading HENRICVS REX, a retrograde attribution to Henry retained from the earlier Short Cross coinage convention. |
