Obverse description Facing crowned bust of King John Balliol within a beaded inner circle, the effigy rendered in the bold, stylised manner typical of late 13th-century Scottish hammered coinage. The king is depicted with a broad, frontal face beneath a prominent crown, with drapery indicated by schematic lines at the shoulders. The hair falls in short curls to either side of the face. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the inner beaded border, naming the issuing monarch.
