Obverse description Crowned facing effigy of King Henry III rendered in a more naturalistic style than earlier classes, featuring a shorter hair treatment that extends only to the level of the king's nose. The monarch holds a lis-tipped sceptre in his right hand. A peripheral legend in uncial Latin characters encircles the portrait within a beaded inner circle. Several bust varieties are known within this class, reflecting the work of multiple moneyers and dies.

Reverse description A voided long cross extending to the coin's edge divides the reverse field into four quarters, each containing three pellets arranged in a triangular formation. A peripheral legend in uncial Latin characters, occasionally featuring Lombardic N's and V's depending on the moneyer, encircles the design within a beaded inner circle. The moneyer's name and mint town are recorded in the legend, divided across the four quadrants of the cross.
