Obverse description Facing crowned portrait of King Henry III rendered in the stylised manner characteristic of mid-13th century English hammered coinage. The king is depicted with a detailed crown and holds a lis-tipped sceptre in his right hand. A beaded inner circle frames the effigy, beyond which the royal legend is disposed around the periphery of the flan. The portrait exhibits the flat, linear artistic style typical of the Long Cross penny series. Numerous die varieties are known within this class.
