| Reverse description | The central field depicts a Māori war canoe (waka) under sail upon stylised waves, with a feather-adorned figure seated at the helm — a motif commonly employed on New Zealand trade tokens of the period to evoke local identity. The central vignette is framed by two sweeping fern fronds meeting at the base, forming a wreath-like enclosure characteristic of W.J. Taylor's die work. Below the canoe scene, within a rectangular panel at the base of the wreath, the date '1872' is rendered in raised numerals. The whole is surrounded by a finely executed beaded border. |
