Additional information

The Gipps Land Hardware Company operated in one of Victoria's most isolated coastal settlements during the early 1860s, when Port Albert functioned as the primary supply port for the Gippsland interior before rail connections made it redundant. Token coinage of this kind filled a genuine commercial gap — the colonial government's copper supply remained chronically inadequate, and merchants who could not make change lost sales. The Andrews references distinguish at least two die varieties for this issue, suggesting meaningful production volume across separate runs.
