| Reverse description | The numeral '1', surmounted by a Tudor crown, is displayed prominently in the centre of the field, flanked on either side by the four digits of the year of issue. The entire central device is enclosed within a wreath of oak leaves and acorns tied at the base with a ribbon bow, a traditional motif employed continuously on British Maundy penny reverses. The design, attributed to Jean Baptiste Merlen, is executed in fine relief against a flat field, with a beaded border encircling the full composition. |
