The Territory of New Guinea was an Australian-administered League of Nations mandate, and its coinage — when it appeared at all — required approval through layers of colonial bureaucracy. This 1929 trial strike predates the territory's first circulating penny by a year; the regular issue wasn't confirmed until 1929 but struck for circulation in 1936.
