Additional information

South Africa's penny coinage of the early 1930s was produced against a backdrop of economic collapse — the Depression hit the country's gold-dependent economy with particular violence, and the government's eventual abandonment of the gold standard in December 1932 triggered a political crisis that brought J.B.M. Hertzog's coalition to its knees. Mintages across the series varied sharply year to year as a result.

The 1931 date is notably scarcer than its immediate successors. By 1936, the series was approaching its end with Edward VIII's accession requiring a redesign that never fully materialized before his abdication.
