Reverse description Central design features a rugby ball set against a pair of upright H-shaped goalposts, rendered in clean relief against the plain field. The composition is flanked on both sides by symmetrical laurel wreaths whose stems meet at the base. The numeral 1 appears at the foot of the goalpost structure, with the Pobjoy Mint mark (PM) visible in small characters at lower left and a triskelion privy mark to the lower right. The legend PENNY and the denomination are incorporated into the lettering around the coin.
