Obverse description Right-facing bareheaded effigy of Queen Elizabeth II after the fourth portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley, depicting the Queen with a diadem and aged features in fine detail. The truncation of the bust is subtly defined, with the engraver's initials 'IRB' incuse below. The encircling legend reads 'ELIZABETH·II·D·G REG·F·D·' with the date to the lower right of the portrait. The deeply mirrored proof fields provide strong contrast against the finely frosted portrait, characteristic of Royal Mint proof coinage.

Obverse lettering ELIZABETH·II·D·G REG·F·D·2008 IRB
(Translation: Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God Queen Defender of the Faith)
Reverse description A close-up section of the Royal Shield of Arms as redesigned by Matthew Dent, forming part of the jigsaw series introduced in 2008. The penny depicts the lower-left quadrant of the shield, showing the lower portion of a golden harp on a blue field representing Ireland, together with the adjoining segment bearing the lower claw of a golden lion passant guardant on red, separated by bold shield divisions. The denomination 'ONE PENNY' is inscribed vertically along the left side of the design, with the engraver's initials 'MD' discreetly placed in the field. The frosted relief elements contrast sharply against the brilliant mirror fields in this proof striking.
