| Reverse description | The reverse displays the crowned portcullis, the heraldic badge of the Palace of Westminster and a traditional emblem of English royal authority, rendered in bold relief at the centre of the field. The portcullis is shown with its characteristic grid of iron bars, downward-pointing spikes at the base, and two chains looping outward from the upper corners, surmounted by a Tudor crown. The circular legend ONE PENNY arcs around the upper portion of the field, with the numeral 1 positioned centrally below the portcullis. The design, originally created by Christopher Ironside for the introduction of decimal coinage in 1971, is framed by a raised bead border. |
